Current Landscape (2026)

  • The defining shift of 2024-2026 is the integration of large language models into socially assistive robots: a two-wave geriatric-hospital study of PAL Robotics’ ARI running an offline Vicuna-13B raised error-free interactions from 27.8% to 70.2% and interaction success from 25% to 74.5%, with corresponding gains in acceptability and usability.
  • Conversational companion robots have scaled in the field, most notably South Korea’s ChatGPT-powered Hyodol doll deployed to over 12,000 elderly people living alone, alongside Intuition Robotics’ ElliQ (proactive tabletop companion active in New York) and the long-standing Paro therapeutic seal.
  • The market has re-priced sharply upward on humanoid momentum: Mordor Intelligence values social robots at about USD 10.4 billion in 2026 (forecast USD 40.23 billion by 2031, 31.1% CAGR), with humanoid form factors holding roughly 48% revenue share and pet-like companions the fastest-growing segment.
  • New care-oriented humanoids reached the field, including China’s Fourier GR-3 (55 DoF, 31 touch sensors, unveiled August 2025 and showcased at CES 2026), Norway/US firm 1X’s home-focused NEO, and Italy’s Oversonic Robee, which secured CE marking as a Class I medical device in late 2025.
  • Incumbent consolidation is visible: SoftBank Robotics’ Pepper manufacturer went bankrupt in February 2025, pushing the platform toward licensing and partnerships, while Sweden’s Furhat Robotics, France’s Blue Frog Robotics (Buddy) and PAL Robotics gained ground in service, hospitality and clinical niches.
  • Regulation tightened materially: the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, in force 1 August 2024) imposes risk-based obligations plus parallel machinery-safety conformity on human-facing robots, and China’s CAC issued Interim Measures for AI Anthropomorphic Interactive Services on 10 April 2026 (effective 15 July 2026) covering conversational and companion robots.
  • Open challenges as of 2026 remain LLM-specific: hallucination and bias in generated dialogue, opacity of robot decision-making, degraded speech recognition for accented speakers, real-time interaction management, and continuous collection of voice, image and behavioural data raising privacy and dual-compliance burdens; socially aware crowd navigation (for example social-force SFM-NMPC planners) is also an active frontier.
