Current Landscape (2026)
- Metaverse architecture in 2024-2026 has crystallised around an open “constellation of standards” rather than a single walled platform: the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) drove its OpenUSD Core Specification toward a v1.0 release targeted for end of 2025, alongside new Physics and Geometry working groups (draft BREP schema), while Khronos glTF advanced interactivity and a draft 3D Gaussian Splatting specification.
- The Metaverse Standards Forum’s glTF/USD 3D Asset Interoperability Working Group formalised glTF-USD round-tripping and an FBX migration project (with Adobe’s open-source USD file-format plug-ins), presenting the state of interoperability at SIGGRAPH 2025 in Vancouver (August 2025).
- Cross-world portability advanced through OMA3’s Inter-World Portaling System (IWPS), released in late 2024 as a “3D hyperlink” protocol standardising decentralised teleportation of avatars and NFT-based assets between virtual worlds via a two-phase handshake.
- Formal standardisation matured: the ITU-T Focus Group on Metaverse (FG-MV) approved its standardisation roadmap (FGMV-51/52) classifying metaverse standards into general, application, enabling-technology and interoperability categories, while IEEE progressed P2048 (terminology/taxonomy) and P7016 (ethically aligned metaverse systems), and the MSF approved a “Consistency of Experience” use case (MSF2025-COE-001, v1.0, November 2025) covering cross-device parity and hybrid fiat/crypto payment protocols.
- The dominant architectural shift is from consumer social worlds to enterprise spatial computing: digital-twin front-ends built on NVIDIA Omniverse, Siemens Xcelerator and PTC ThingWorx now serve as the interaction layer, with the spatial-computing market at roughly $20-135bn in 2025 (depending on scope) and survey data showing about 67% of manufacturing CIOs planning XR-plus-digital-twin integration by 2027.
- Hardware architecture polarised into two poles: Apple’s Vision Pro line (Vision Pro 2 with M5 chip and 120Hz, unveiled 15 October 2025, at 299-800) holding roughly 75% combined XR share; consumer VR headset shipments fell sharply in 2025 even as overall XR shipments rebounded to about 14.5m units (+41.6% YoY).
- Consumer social-metaverse architecture contracted markedly: Meta shut down Horizon Workrooms on 16 February 2026 and pared back Horizon Worlds’ in-headset creation tools, underscoring that persistent shared-world adoption still lags the “silent” enterprise deployments.
- Open challenges as of 2026 remain seamless glTF-USD-FBX round-tripping (capability gaps and lossy conversion), portable decentralised identity and payments across worlds, standardising 3D Gaussian Splatting and interactive/physics semantics, and sustaining persistent, interoperable social spaces beyond siloed enterprise use cases.
