Knowledge Graph Construction is the process of automatically or semi-automatically building structured graph representations of world knowledge by extracting entities, relations, and attributes from heterogeneous sources such as text corpora, databases, and web data. The discipline combines techniques from natural language processing, information retrieval, and ontology engineering to produce machine-readable graphs that support reasoning, question answering, and semantic search.

Current Landscape (2026)
- LLM-driven extraction has become the default construction paradigm since Microsoft released GraphRAG in April 2024: documents are passed to an LLM to extract entity/relation triples, which are then de-duplicated across chunks and partitioned with hierarchical Leiden community detection into summarised subgraphs. Microsoft’s open-source graphrag reached v3.1.0 by May 2026.
- Tooling consolidated around three construction stacks by 2026 — Neo4j’s first-party neo4j-graphrag Python package and LLM Knowledge Graph Builder, LlamaIndex’s PropertyGraphIndex with swappable path extractors, and LangChain’s LLMGraphTransformer — with FalkorDB, Memgraph (MAGE text-to-cypher) and Kuzu shipping LLM-integrated construction features.
- Standards moved decisively: ISO/IEC 39075 (GQL, Graph Query Language) was published on 11 April 2024 as the first new ISO database-query standard since SQL in 1987, with Technical Corrigendum 1 (ISO/IEC 39075:2024/Cor 1:2026) published 30 July 2026, giving property-graph construction a vendor-neutral, portable target language.
- Research is pushing past naive triple extraction: KGGen (NeurIPS 2025) adds clustering-based entity resolution to reduce graph sparsity, HyperGraphRAG (NeurIPS 2025) represents n-ary facts as hyperedges, and AutoGraph-R1 (2025) applies end-to-end reinforcement learning to graph construction; agentic pipelines (e.g. Neo4j NODES 2026 “Agentic GraphRAG”) now infer schemas automatically rather than requiring hand-designed ontologies.
- Cost has emerged as the central trade-off — LLM-based construction runs roughly 5–20x the indexing cost of vector RAG — driving cheaper alternatives such as the dependency-parser pipeline in arXiv:2507.03226 (2025) that reaches 94% of LLM-graph quality (61.87% vs 65.83%) without any LLM calls.
- Evaluation matured with GraphRAG-Bench (dataset released May 2025, accepted at ICLR 2026), which scores the full pipeline from graph construction through retrieval to generation; the UK’s National Innovation Centre for Data reported in 2026 that GraphRAG made agents around 80% more “truthful” than vector-only retrieval.
- Open challenges as of 2026 remain incremental and scalable entity resolution (blocking/matching/clustering that scales sub-quadratically), multimodal source integration, temporal/bi-temporal validity of facts (addressed by tools such as Zep’s Graphiti tracking what was true and when it was learned), and the lack of open, modular, standardised construction toolsets and benchmarks.
