This page provides an overview of the Layer 2 and Layer 3 solutions that are being developed to enhance the scalability, functionality, and usability of the Bitcoin network.
The Importance of Layer 2 and Layer 3
Bitcoin’s base layer, or Layer 1, is designed to be a secure and decentralized settlement layer. However, it has limitations in terms of scalability and programmability. Layer 2 and Layer 3 solutions are being developed to address these limitations and unlock the full potential of the Bitcoin network.
Layer 2: Scaling Bitcoin
Layer 2 solutions are protocols that are built on top of the Bitcoin network to handle transactions off-chain, thereby increasing speed and reducing costs.
The Lightning Network
The Lightning Network is the most well-known Layer 2 solution for Bitcoin. It enables instant, low-cost payments by creating a network of payment channels between users.
Smart Contract Platforms
Stacks: A smart contract platform that enables decentralized applications and smart contracts on Bitcoin.
Rootstock (RSK): A sidechain to Bitcoin that provides a platform for smart contracts that is highly compatible with Ethereum’s Virtual Machine (EVM).
Rollups
Merlin Chain: A Bitcoin Layer 2 that integrates ZK-Rollups, a technology that bundles multiple transactions into a single proof, further enhancing scalability and efficiency.
Layer 3: The Application Layer
Layer 3 solutions are envisioned as an “application layer” built on top of Layer 2 protocols. Their primary focus will be on interoperability, customization, and enhanced user experience.
RGB
RGB is a smart contract system for Bitcoin and the Lightning Network that allows for the issuance and management of digital assets.
Taro / Taproot Assets
Taproot Assets is a new protocol from Lightning Labs that allows for the issuance of assets on the Bitcoin blockchain that can be transferred over the Lightning Network.
BitVM
BitVM is a new paradigm that enables arbitrary program execution on Bitcoin, combining Turing-complete expressiveness with the security of Bitcoin consensus.
