Text-to-3D is a generative AI capability that synthesises three-dimensional geometry, texture, and material properties from natural-language descriptions, bridging the gap between linguistic intent and spatial representation. Dominant technical approaches include score-distillation sampling (SDS) that distils a 2D diffusion prior into a NeRF or 3D Gaussian Splatting field, multi-view diffusion models that jointly generate consistent images from multiple viewpoints before reconstructing a mesh, and image-conditioned 3D reconstruction pipelines. Text-to-3D has transformative applications in game asset creation, virtual production, digital twins, augmented-reality content authoring, and e-commerce visualisation, dramatically reducing the time and expertise required to populate 3D environments.

Text-to-3D emerged as a distinct capability around 2022 following the landmark DreamFusion paper (Poole et al., 2022), which introduced Score Distillation Sampling (SDS). SDS leverages a pre-trained 2D text-to-image diffusion model as a differentiable prior: a 3D representation (initially a NeRF) is rendered from random viewpoints, each rendering is scored by the diffusion model’s noise prediction network, and gradients are back-propagated through the differentiable renderer to update the 3D field. This circumvents the need for paired text–3D training data, which is extremely scarce compared to image-text corpora.
Subsequent architectures replaced NeRF with 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) for faster rendering—2DGS variants achieve real-time inference. Multi-view diffusion models (e.g. MVDiffusion, Zero123++) jointly denoise images from multiple viewpoints, enforcing 3D consistency in the latent space before reconstruction, avoiding the optimisation instabilities of per-scene SDS. Feed-forward 3D reconstruction networks (e.g. One-2-3-45, CRM) process multi-view outputs in a single forward pass, reducing generation time from minutes to seconds.
Applications are transforming creative and industrial workflows. In game development, text-to-3D can populate scene environments with prop assets at a fraction of the manual modelling cost, with artists providing prompts and iterating on outputs. Film VFX pipelines use text-to-3D for concept-model rapid prototyping. E-commerce platforms generate 3D product visualisations from text descriptions for augmented-reality try-on. Architecture and urban-planning tools generate building massing models from textual briefs.
Key limitations include multi-face Janus artefacts (the model generating multiple front-facing views instead of a coherent 360° object), inconsistent fine detail at high frequencies, and difficulty representing thin structures or transparent materials. Evaluation remains challenging because standard 2D image metrics (FID, CLIP score) do not capture 3D geometric quality, and human perceptual studies are expensive. Active research targets controllable generation (editing specific attributes while preserving others), animation-ready rigged mesh output, and physically-based material estimation.
