The Research Layer is the cross-cutting stratum where new methods, models, and understanding are generated before adoption into production strata. It sits above evaluation and experimentation concerns and feeds the algorithm and model layers with validated advances. It contains experiments, hypotheses, prototypes, and the findings that justify changes elsewhere.

  • The Research Layer produces the knowledge and prototype methods that later strata depend on for improvement. Typical members include experimental protocols, ablation studies, prototype implementations, and peer-reviewed or internally validated findings. It is concerned with discovery and validation rather than operation.
  • It requires the Evaluation Layer to measure whether a proposed advance is real and the Simulation Layer to test ideas cheaply before deployment. It enables the Algorithm and Model Architecture Layers, which adopt proven techniques. Rigour here protects against propagating spurious results downstream.
  • The layer bridges to the scientific method and reproducibility, the standards that distinguish durable findings from noise. Transparent methodology recorded here lets others verify and build on the work.
