Portfolio optimisation is the quantitative process of selecting asset weights within an investment portfolio to achieve an objective, most commonly maximising expected return for a given level of risk, using tools such as convex optimisation over a covariance matrix of asset returns. Modern portfolio theory, originating with Markowitz, formalised this as a mean-variance optimisation problem. Practical implementations extend the basic formulation with constraints on turnover, sector exposure and transaction costs.
