Platform independence is the property of software that allows it to run correctly across different operating systems, hardware architectures or devices without modification. It is achieved by isolating platform-specific behaviour behind a hardware abstraction layer, so that application logic addresses a stable interface rather than the underlying system directly. It is a design goal rather than an absolute state, typically achieved to varying degrees depending on how much platform-specific code a system still requires.
