Multimodal reasoning is the capability of an AI system to integrate and draw inferences across multiple input modalities such as text, images, audio, and video. It requires aligning representations from heterogeneous sources into a shared semantic space so that conclusions depend jointly on all available signals. This underpins tasks like visual question answering, document understanding, and grounded dialogue where no single modality is sufficient.

- Modern systems achieve this by projecting each modality into a common embedding space and applying cross-attention so tokens from one modality can condition on another. The approach powers visual question answering, chart and document comprehension, and agentic perception, but remains sensitive to modality imbalance and hallucination when one channel is weak or contradictory.
