Methane mitigation mining is the practice of siting Bitcoin mining hardware at sources of vented or flared methane, such as oil wellheads and landfills, to combust the gas in generators that power the miners. The mining load creates a continuous, location-flexible demand for energy that would otherwise be wasted, converting a potent greenhouse gas into electricity and revenue. It is promoted as a way to reduce net emissions while monetising stranded hydrocarbons.

  • Combusting methane converts it to CO2, sharply reducing its warming impact, while the miner provides a buyer of last resort for gas with no pipeline access. Operators deploy modular containerised rigs that follow the gas, ramping load up or down as supply varies.
