Matter is a royalty-free smart-home connectivity standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance to provide a common application layer enabling devices from different manufacturers to interoperate over IP networks. Built on top of Thread and Wi-Fi for transport, Matter defines a unified data model, secure commissioning, and local control that removes dependence on proprietary vendor clouds. It is backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung, and aims to resolve the fragmentation that historically forced consumers into single-ecosystem smart-home purchases.

- Matter emerged in 2022 from Project CHIP (Connected Home over IP), an industry effort to end the fragmentation that left smart-home buyers locked into mutually incompatible ecosystems. Rather than inventing a new radio, Matter standardises the application layer — the data model describing what a light, lock, or thermostat is and how it behaves — and rides over existing IP transports, principally Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth devices and Thread for low-power battery-operated sensors.
- A defining design choice is local control. Matter devices operate over a local fabric and can be commissioned and operated without routing commands through a manufacturer’s cloud, improving latency, privacy, and resilience to vendor service shutdowns. Secure commissioning uses device attestation certificates and a standardised onboarding flow, often initiated by scanning a QR code, which cryptographically proves a device is a genuine certified product before it joins the network.
- Interoperability is enforced through certification: a device bearing the Matter logo must implement the standard data model for its device type, guaranteeing that any Matter controller can operate it regardless of brand. Bridges allow existing Zigbee and Z-Wave devices to appear as Matter endpoints, providing a migration path that protects existing consumer investment while the ecosystem matures.
- Adoption has been gradual, constrained by firmware maturity and the practical complexities of multi-admin support, where a single device must be controllable simultaneously by Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Despite early friction, Matter represents the most credible industry consensus to date on smart-home interoperability, and its IP-native, locally-controllable architecture positions it as foundational infrastructure for the next generation of connected devices.
