Fooocus is an open-source desktop image-generation interface for Stable Diffusion XL released in August 2023 by Lvmin Zhang (GitHub handle lllyasviel, originator of ControlNet, IC-Light, Forge, Paints-Undo, FramePack and OmniControl), conceived as a deliberate philosophical and ergonomic reaction…

About Fooocus
- Fooocus is an opinionated, automation-heavy open-source desktop application for generating images with Stable Diffusion XL, released on GitHub as
lllyasviel/Fooocusin August 2023 by Lvmin Zhang — the Stanford / academic researcher already widely recognised as the originator of ControlNet (Zhang et al. 2023, CVPR Marr Prize finalist) and subsequently of IC-Light, Paints-Undo, FramePack, OmniControl and the Stable Diffusion Forge WebUI fork. Fooocus’s stated mission is to combine the openness and locality of self-hosted Stable Diffusion with the user-experience simplicity of commercial cloud generators such as Midjourney, DALL-E 3 and Adobe Firefly. - The project’s design manifesto — printed prominently in the README — sets out the principle that “all the local automatic optimization is enabled, hyperparameter tweaking minimised”. In practical terms this means that whereas AUTOMATIC1111 WebUI exposes more than 200 user-tunable parameters across a dozen tabs and ComfyUI requires the user to physically wire up a directed-acyclic graph of nodes representing each pipeline stage, Fooocus presents the user with a single prompt box, a style picker, an aspect-ratio selector and a Generate button. Every other decision — sampler choice, refiner switchpoint, FreeU coefficients, LoRA blend weights, negative-prompt template, CLIP-skip, classifier-free guidance scale, sigma schedule, latent upscaling — is taken automatically by hand-tuned heuristics that Lvmin Zhang derived through extensive offline experimentation with Midjourney-quality reference corpora.
- Fooocus is not a thin wrapper. The Fooocus source tree carries roughly 20,000 lines of Python implementing custom patches to the SDXL forward pass, a GPT-2-style prompt-expansion engine (the “Fooocus V2” prompt expansion uses a small fine-tuned language model to rewrite user prompts with quality-boosting tokens borrowed from Midjourney v4 telemetry and Lvmin’s curated prompt corpus), an automatic refiner scheduler (the SDXL refiner is invoked at an adaptive switch threshold rather than the conventional fixed 0.8 ratio), an automatic FreeU module (Si et al. 2023 free-lunch noise rebalancing applied without user configuration), an automatic LoRA blender (which adaptively rebalances LoRA strengths when multiple LoRAs are stacked to avoid over-saturation), and a custom VAE decoder incorporating the SDXL VAE fp16 fix for higher-fidelity decoding on consumer GPUs.
History and Authorship
Fooocus emerged from a specific cultural moment in the open-source generative AI ecosystem. By mid-2023:
-
AUTOMATIC1111 Stable Diffusion WebUI had become the de facto local standard but was widely criticised for parameter overload — its Settings and Extensions tabs alone exposed several hundred toggles, and onboarding required either YouTube tutorials or active Discord/Reddit guidance.
-
ComfyUI (released January 2023 by
comfyanonymous) provided a much more powerful node-based pipeline editor but pushed all complexity onto the user. -
InvokeAI (commercial-friendly fork, since pivoted into a venture-backed business) sat between A1111 and Photoshop ergonomically but was still parameter-heavy.
-
Midjourney v5 (March 2023) and DALL-E 3 (October 2023) demonstrated that aggressive default-curation could produce a vastly better user experience for the casual creator.
-
Stable Diffusion XL Base 1.0 was released on 27 July 2023, providing for the first time a 1024×1024-native open model rivalling Midjourney in raw quality.
Within roughly four weeks of the SDXL 1.0 release Lvmin Zhang published Fooocus, explicitly framing it as “the Midjourney of Stable Diffusion” — a tool that would let SDXL deliver Midjourney-quality output without Midjourney’s subscription, content restrictions, or cloud dependency.
The project grew rapidly: ~5,000 GitHub stars within a month, ~15,000 by end of 2023, ~30,000 by mid-2024, and approximately 40,000 stars by Q1 2026. It became the third-most-popular Stable Diffusion frontend after AUTOMATIC1111 (~140K stars) and ComfyUI (~55K stars).
Authorship Profile: Lvmin Zhang (lllyasviel)
Fooocus is deeply tied to its author. Lvmin Zhang’s project output between 2023 and 2026 represents one of the most prolific single-researcher portfolios in open-source generative AI:
-
ControlNet (2023, CVPR 2023): the foundational technique for spatial conditioning of diffusion models (Canny, depth, OpenPose, scribble, segmentation, normal-map, lineart, MLSD). 30,000+ GitHub stars on
lllyasviel/ControlNet. Widely regarded as the most influential post-SD1.5 development in the diffusion ecosystem. -
Fooocus (August 2023): the simplified SDXL interface described in this document.
-
Forge (
lllyasviel/stable-diffusion-webui-forge, February 2024): a more performant fork of AUTOMATIC1111 WebUI with re-engineered memory management, native Flux.1 support, and integration of many Fooocus optimisations. Forge became the community-preferred Flux.1 interface during 2024-2025. -
IC-Light (May 2024): controllable image relighting via diffusion model conditioning. 6,000+ stars.
-
Paints-Undo (July 2024): a model that reconstructs the painting process from a finished image, producing time-lapse drawing videos. 3,500+ stars.
-
FramePack (December 2024): low-VRAM video frame interpolation enabling 13B-parameter video diffusion models to run on 6 GB consumer GPUs. 2,000+ stars.
-
OmniControl (2025): unified controlnet successor combining geometric, semantic and style conditioning.
This rapid sequence of project launches explains Fooocus’s maintenance trajectory: Lvmin Zhang’s attention shifted progressively away from Fooocus from early 2024 onwards as Forge, IC-Light, FramePack and OmniControl absorbed his development bandwidth. The last substantive Fooocus release was v2.5 in September 2024; subsequent activity in 2025-2026 has been confined to bug fixes, dependency bumps and community pull requests.
Architecture and Components
Fooocus is implemented as a Python Gradio web application. On first launch it downloads SDXL Base 1.0 (6.94 GB), SDXL Refiner 1.0 (6.08 GB), and Fooocus-specific LoRA/style packs (~2 GB) into a local models/ directory tree.
Gradio Web UI
The user interface is a single Gradio-based HTML page served on 127.0.0.1:7865 by default. The default form is approximately 800 pixels wide and consists of:
-
A single prompt textarea.
-
A Negative Prompt textarea (hidden by default, expandable).
-
A row of preset buttons (Speed, Quality, Extreme Speed, Lightning, Hyper-SD).
-
An aspect-ratio selector with 16 presets ranging from 704×1408 portrait through 1408×704 landscape.
-
A style picker showing all currently-applied styles.
-
The Generate button.
An “Advanced” toggle progressively discloses sampler choice, CFG scale, sharpness, seed control, refiner switch-point, freeU coefficients, model selection, LoRA loadout (up to 5 LoRAs stackable), and Image Prompt / Inpaint / Outpaint / Describe / Faceswap input tabs.
Prompt Expansion Engine (Fooocus-V2)
The “Fooocus V2” style applies the project’s signature prompt expansion. A GPT-2-tuned small language model (110M parameters, derived from
gpt2finetuned on a curated corpus of Midjourney v4 prompts plus Lvmin Zhang’s hand-curated prompt library) rewrites the user prompt by appending quality-boosting tokens, lighting descriptors, camera/lens specifications, and artistic medium qualifiers. The expansion model adds approximately 30-60 tokens to a typical short user prompt, transforming, e.g., “a cat” into “a cat, cinematic, intricate detail, sharp focus, dramatic lighting, photorealistic, 8k, masterpiece, professional photography”.Automatic Refiner Scheduler
SDXL ships as a two-stage pipeline (Base + Refiner), with the conventional handoff occurring at denoise step ratio 0.8. Fooocus replaces this fixed ratio with an adaptive switch threshold that varies depending on prompt complexity, style, and the chosen performance mode. Empirically this improves output sharpness and reduces the “refiner over-smoothing” artefact that affects many naive SDXL pipelines.
Style Preset Library
Fooocus ships 100+ named styles, each encoded as a (prompt-prefix, prompt-suffix, negative-prompt) triple. The presets are organised into families:
-
Fooocus original: Fooocus V2, Fooocus Enhance, Fooocus Sharp, Fooocus Masterpiece, Fooocus Photograph, Fooocus Negative.
-
MRE (MidJourney-Recipe-Engineered): MRE Cinematic Dynamic, MRE Spontaneous Picture, MRE Manga, MRE Anime, MRE Comic Hero Portrait, MRE Heroic Fantasy, MRE Dark Cyberpunk, MRE Lyrical Geometry, MRE Sumi-e Symbolic, MRE Sumi-e Detailed, MRE Surreality, MRE Embedded Image, MRE Bad Dream.
-

-
Artistic schools: Ads Advertising, Ads Automotive, Ads Corporate, Artstyle Abstract, Artstyle Art Deco, Artstyle Art Nouveau, Artstyle Constructivist, Artstyle Cubist, Artstyle Expressionist, Artstyle Graffiti, Artstyle Hyperrealism, Artstyle Impressionist, Artstyle Pointillism, Artstyle Pop Art, Artstyle Psychedelic, Artstyle Renaissance, Artstyle Steampunk, Artstyle Surrealist, Artstyle Typography, Artstyle Watercolor.
ImagePrompt (IP-Adapter Integration)
The ImagePrompt tab accepts up to 4 reference images and applies IP-Adapter conditioning (Ye et al. 2023) at configurable strength, allowing the user to bias generation toward the colour palette, composition, content, or face identity of the references without explicit prompt-engineering. Four modes are exposed: ImagePrompt (general), PyraCanny (edge-only ControlNet), CPDS (depth-only ControlNet), and FaceSwap (identity-only IP-Adapter Face Plus).
Inpaint and Outpaint
Masked editing is handled by a dedicated inpaint head — Fooocus uses a finetuned SDXL inpainting checkpoint (
fooocus_inpaint_head.pth, ~150 MB) rather than the stock SDXL base, achieving substantially sharper edge transitions. Outpainting is implemented as inpainting against an extended canvas with the user choosing left/right/top/bottom expansion directions.PyraCanny / Canny / Depth ControlNets
Fooocus integrates pre-trained ControlNet models for edge-based and depth-based spatial conditioning, exposed through the ImagePrompt tab rather than as a separate ControlNet panel.
Automatic FreeU
FreeU (Si et al. 2023) rebalances the skip-connection and backbone contributions in the U-Net of a diffusion model, producing measurably better outputs without retraining. Fooocus applies FreeU automatically with empirically tuned coefficients.
Automatic LoRA Blending
Up to 5 LoRAs can be stacked. Fooocus rebalances effective LoRA strengths to prevent over-saturation when multiple style LoRAs are combined — a problem that frequently plagues naive A1111 LoRA stacking.
Performance Modes
Fooocus exposes a set of built-in performance presets, each of which combines a sampler, step count, and (optionally) a distilled checkpoint into a one-click selection. The presets are deliberately reductive: the user never sees DPM++ 2M Karras versus UniPC versus DDIM as a free-form choice; instead they pick a slider position that determines speed/quality trade-off:
-
Speed: 30 steps, DPM++ 2M Karras sampler, CFG 7.0, sharpness 2.0, refiner switch ~0.5. The default. Approximately 6-12 seconds per 1024² image on an RTX 4090, 12-20 seconds on an RTX 3090, 25-40 seconds on an RTX 3060 / RTX 4060 Ti, 50-90 seconds on an RTX 2070 Super. Quality is intentionally tuned to be indistinguishable from Quality mode for most prompts whilst halving inference time.
-
Quality: 60 steps, DPM++ 2M Karras, CFG 7.0, sharpness 2.0, refiner switch ~0.5. Doubles the step count for diminishing-returns quality improvement; typically only visible on highly complex compositions or when fine textile/skin/hair detail is critical. Approximately 12-24 seconds on an RTX 4090.
-
Extreme Speed: 8 steps, LCM (Latent Consistency Model) sampler, CFG 1.0 (LCM does not use classifier-free guidance), sharpness 0.0, refiner disabled. Sacrifices some prompt-following fidelity for ~4× speedup. Approximately 2-3 seconds on an RTX 4090. Particularly useful for rapid iteration phases where the user is exploring conceptual directions.
-
Lightning: 4 steps, SDXL Lightning distilled checkpoints (ByteDance, Lin & Yang 2024), CFG 1.0, sharpness 0.0, refiner disabled. Requires the SDXL Lightning checkpoint variant (single file replacing the SDXL Base 1.0 checkpoint). Approximately 1-1.5 seconds on an RTX 4090. Suitable for live demonstrations, educational settings, and high-throughput batch generation.
-
Hyper-SD (added in v2.4): 4-8 steps, ByteDance Hyper-SD distillation (Ren et al. 2024). Trajectory-segmented consistency distillation. Comparable speed to Lightning with slightly different quality/prompt-following trade-offs.
In the Advanced panel users can override these presets to pick from a longer list of samplers (Euler, Euler a, Heun, DPM++ 2S a, DPM++ 2M, DPM++ 2M SDE, DPM++ 2M SDE Karras, DPM++ 3M SDE, UniPC, LCM, DDIM, PLMS, Restart), schedulers (Karras, Exponential, Normal, Simple, SGM Uniform, DDIM, DPM Solver++), and CFG scale (typically 4-12 for normal sampling, 1-2 for LCM/Lightning). The deliberate restriction in the default UI reflects Fooocus’s design philosophy: most users will never need these advanced choices because the defaults are already calibrated.
Use Cases and Major Application Families
Fooocus has found particular traction in five user communities:
Hobbyist Creative Users
The single largest demographic. Reddit /r/StableDiffusion, /r/Fooocus (~12K subscribers), Discord communities (Unstable Diffusion, Civitai, RunDiffusion) all report Fooocus as the recommended onboarding tool for new Stable Diffusion users. The Windows one-click installer is the principal driver: a non-technical user can download a 1.5 GB self-extracting executable, double-click it, and produce Midjourney-quality images within five minutes.
Indie Game and Tabletop Asset Creation
Fooocus’s MRE Heroic Fantasy, SAI Fantasy Art and Artstyle Pixel Art presets are well-suited to tabletop RPG asset creation (character portraits, item icons, regional maps, monster illustrations). Communities at /r/dndmaps, /r/UnearthedArcana and /r/proceduralgeneration actively recommend Fooocus.
Concept Art and Pre-Visualisation
Independent film, animation and game studios use Fooocus for rapid concept iteration before committing to expensive ComfyUI workflows. The Inpaint and Outpaint tools support iterative refinement of single concept images.
Educational and Demonstrative Use
University AI ethics courses, computer-science introductory classes, and creative-coding workshops (e.g. Goldsmiths Computational Arts MA, Imperial Department of Computing MSc AI elective) use Fooocus as the canonical “show students local generative AI” tool because installation is uniquely friction-free.
Privacy-Sensitive Workflows
Journalists handling sensitive image illustration tasks (where cloud services like DALL-E 3 / Midjourney would not be appropriate due to data leakage to OpenAI/Discord), legal professionals creating illustrative renderings of evidence, and corporate communications teams in regulated industries (banking, healthcare, defence) where image prompts cannot leave the local network.
Forks and Ecosystem
Fooocus’s permissive licence (GPLv3 for code) and large user base have spawned multiple active forks:
RuinedFooocus (runew0lf/RuinedFooocus)
~3,000 stars. Extends Fooocus with additional samplers (DPM++ 3M SDE, UniPC, Restart), more aggressive customisation hooks, image-prompt weighting, OneTrainer LoRA integration, and a more conventional A1111-style metadata pipeline. Targets power users who want Fooocus’s ergonomics without Fooocus’s opinions.
Fooocus-MRE (Multi-Region Enhanced, MoonRide303/Fooocus-MRE)
~1,500 stars. Adds regional prompting (different prompts for different image regions à la regional-prompter), Wildcards (__seasons__ → random seasonal token), additional ControlNets, and dynamic-prompt support.
Fooocus-ControlNet-SDXL (fenneishi/Fooocus-Control)
~700 stars. Adds the full suite of SDXL ControlNets (OpenPose, depth, lineart, segmentation, normal map) beyond the canonical Fooocus-shipped PyraCanny/CPDS pair.
SimpleSDXL2 (metercai/SimpleSDXL)
~600 stars. Chinese-community fork adding Flux.1 support, additional models, Comfy workflow import, multilingual UI.
Competitive Position (2026)
Fooocus sits in a distinctive niche between several competing classes of tool. The 2026 landscape:
vs ComfyUI
ComfyUI offers maximum flexibility through its node-graph interface; Fooocus offers near-zero configuration. ComfyUI has won the professional power-user segment (VFX studios, advanced LoRA training shops, agentic Comfy-as-Backend deployments). Fooocus retains the casual / onboarding segment. The two are increasingly viewed as complementary: many users start in Fooocus and graduate to ComfyUI when they need pipeline-level control.
vs AUTOMATIC1111 WebUI
A1111 remains the most-installed SD frontend by raw download count, but its UI complexity is increasingly perceived as antiquated. Fooocus has captured a substantial share of A1111’s former onboarding audience. A1111’s update cadence has slowed dramatically since AUTOMATIC1111 himself stepped back from active maintenance in late 2023; the de facto succession path has gone to Forge (also by Lvmin Zhang), not Fooocus.
vs Forge (lllyasviel/stable-diffusion-webui-forge)
Forge is the more strategically important Lvmin Zhang project from 2024 onwards. Forge supports Flux.1, Stable Diffusion 3, SDXL and SD 1.5 in a single re-engineered A1111-derived UI with substantially better memory management. Many Fooocus users who want Flux.1 capabilities have migrated to Forge.
vs InvokeAI
InvokeAI pivoted into a commercial venture-backed company in 2024 with paid cloud and enterprise offerings. The open-source Community Edition remains available but development priorities are now driven by commercial customers. Fooocus’s purely-open-source posture remains attractive to the OSS purist audience.
vs SwarmUI (formerly StableSwarmUI)
SwarmUI (mcmonkeyprojects/SwarmUI) provides a simpler UI on top of a ComfyUI backend. Architecturally elegant; growing user base. Differentiated from Fooocus by being natively multi-architecture (Flux, SD3, SDXL, SD1.5).
vs Midjourney / DALL-E 3 / Adobe Firefly
These commercial cloud services dominate the consumer market by raw user count (Midjourney ~20M subscribers 2025) but cannot be installed locally, do not preserve user privacy at the prompt level, charge subscription fees ($10-60/month), and impose content restrictions that many creative users find unacceptable. Fooocus is the dominant local Midjourney-class alternative.
Academic Context and Research Influence
Fooocus itself is a software application rather than a published research result, but it is tightly linked to a body of academic work by Lvmin Zhang and collaborators:
-
ControlNet (Zhang, Rao & Agrawala 2023, CVPR): foundational technique used in Fooocus’s ImagePrompt/PyraCanny pipeline. CVPR 2023 Marr Prize finalist, 8,000+ citations.
-
FreeU (Si et al. 2023, NeurIPS): free-lunch noise rebalancing applied automatically in Fooocus.
-
IP-Adapter (Ye et al. 2023): image-prompt conditioning used in Fooocus’s ImagePrompt tab.
-
Latent Consistency Models (Luo et al. 2023, ICCV Workshop): underlies Fooocus’s Extreme Speed mode.
-
SDXL (Podell et al. 2023, ICLR): the base architecture Fooocus orchestrates.
-
SDXL Lightning (Lin & Yang 2024, ByteDance): 4-step distilled checkpoint integrated as Fooocus’s Lightning mode.
-
IC-Light (Zhang 2024) and Paints-Undo (Zhang 2024): Lvmin Zhang’s adjacent projects that share architectural building blocks with Fooocus.
Fooocus is also frequently cited in human-computer interaction (HCI) and design research as a case study in “opinionated automation” — Renderforest, Nielsen Norman Group, and ACM CHI papers have used Fooocus as an example of a generative-AI interface that successfully hides expert decisions behind sensible defaults whilst preserving full local control.
Current Landscape (2026)
As of May 2026, Fooocus occupies the following position:
- GitHub stars: ~40,000 on the upstream repo, ~6,000 cumulative across all named forks.
- Active monthly users: estimated 200,000-400,000 globally (based on RunPod/Vast template downloads, Hugging Face Space usage, Civitai analytics, and Reddit/Discord engagement).
- Latest stable release: v2.5.5, September 2024. Bug-fix-level commits continue but no major feature releases since.
- Architecture support: SDXL Base 1.0, SDXL Refiner 1.0, SDXL Lightning, SDXL Turbo, Hyper-SD-XL, Playground v2.5 (community), SDXL-derived community checkpoints (Juggernaut XL, RealVisXL, DreamShaper XL, AlbedoBase XL, Pony Diffusion V6 XL).
- Architecture not supported officially: Flux.1 Dev / Schnell / Pro, Stable Diffusion 3 / 3.5, Stable Cascade, Lumina-Next. Community forks (SimpleSDXL2, RuinedFooocus dev branches) add Flux support unofficially.
- Distribution channels: GitHub source releases, Windows 7-zip self-extracting installers (
1.5 GB), macOS DMGs, Linux pip installation, RunPod templates ($0.39/hour on RTX 4090), Vast.ai marketplace images, Replicate hosted endpoint (konieshadow/fooocus-api, ~30K runs/month), Hugging Face Spaces (multiple community deployments). - Regulatory exposure: The EU AI Act (entered force August 2024, full applicability August 2026) classifies generative image AI as limited-risk with transparency obligations; Article 50 requires deepfake disclosure. Fooocus’s Faceswap module specifically falls under these requirements, though enforcement is on operators rather than the open-source tool itself. The UK AI Regulation White Paper (2023) + AI Safety Institute / AI Security Institute (2024) defer to sector regulators.
- Content provenance: Fooocus does not natively embed C2PA Content Credentials; community pull requests proposing C2PA support have been outstanding since late 2024 with no merge.
UK Context: Academic Use, Creative Communities and Industry Adoption
The United Kingdom hosts a distinctive cluster of Fooocus usage spanning hobbyist creative communities, academic computer-science education, creative-industries deployment, and selective public-sector experimentation. Whilst Fooocus is not a UK-developed project (Lvmin Zhang is based at Stanford), the UK creative-AI ecosystem has adopted it with disproportionate enthusiasm.
Academic Institutions
Imperial College London (Department of Computing, Department of Bioengineering, Imperial-X): Fooocus is widely used in Imperial’s MSc Artificial Intelligence elective courses and the MSc Computing (Specialism: AI and Machine Learning) generative-models module as the canonical demonstration tool for “local generative AI without cloud dependency”. The Imperial-X “AI for the Creative Industries” initiative (launched 2024 under the Royal School of Mines building) uses Fooocus in workshops with the Royal College of Art, London College of Communication and Imperial Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication.
University College London (UCL Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Slade School of Fine Art): The UCL Slade School + UCL Computer Science cross-faculty programme “Computational Art” deploys Fooocus as the principal local generative-AI tool for studio practice modules. UCL Computer Science MSc Computational Statistics and Machine Learning students use Fooocus in introductory diffusion model labs.
University of Cambridge (Department of Computer Science and Technology, Cambridge University Engineering Department CUED): Cambridge MPhil Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence students use Fooocus alongside ComfyUI in the Advanced Topics in Machine Learning module. The Cambridge Centre for AI in Medicine has used Fooocus’s Inpaint capability for anonymisation experiments on retinal imagery.
University of Edinburgh (School of Informatics, Centre for Doctoral Training in Natural Language Processing): Edinburgh CDT students use Fooocus in NLP-meets-vision multimodal courses. The Edinburgh Futures Institute hosts an annual generative AI showcase featuring Fooocus-generated student work.
University of Manchester (Department of Computer Science, Manchester School of Art): Joint Manchester School of Art + Computer Science research projects use Fooocus for creative-AI investigation. The Manchester AI Foundry training programme (launched 2024 with £2.4M Innovate UK funding) includes Fooocus as a recommended local tool.
Goldsmiths, University of London (Department of Computing, Computational Arts MA): The Goldsmiths Computational Arts MA — one of the most prominent creative-coding programmes in the UK — actively recommends Fooocus alongside ComfyUI and Runway as principal generative-AI tools for studio practice. Goldsmiths alumni include several artists active in the London AI-art gallery scene (e.g. Memo Akten, Anna Ridler).
University of the Arts London (UAL — Central Saint Martins, London College of Communication, Camberwell College of Arts): UAL’s Creative Computing Institute (CCI) at Camberwell uses Fooocus in its MA/MSc Creative Computing programmes. CCI has hosted Fooocus-themed workshops as part of the London Festival of AI.
Royal College of Art (RCA, School of Communication): RCA’s Visual Communication and Digital Direction programmes incorporate Fooocus in design-research practice.
London Creative-AI Community
London hosts one of Europe’s densest concentrations of generative-AI creative practitioners. Fooocus is widely used across:
-
Somerset House Studios: artist-residency programme with several practitioners using Fooocus in published work.
-
The Photographers’ Gallery: hosts AI-photography exhibitions where Fooocus has been visibly used.
-
The Barbican Centre: the AI: More than Human (2019) successor programming has featured Fooocus-generated work.
-
The Trampery, Shoreditch and Old Street: co-working spaces hosting numerous indie game studios and creative agencies actively using Fooocus.
-
Discord servers: London-based servers such as “AI Art London”, “Stable Diffusion UK” and various Goldsmiths/CCI alumni networks have active Fooocus communities.
Northern English Creative-AI Hubs
Manchester (MediaCityUK Salford, Manchester Digital, Northern Quarter): Manchester has a vibrant indie-game and creative-agency cluster centred on the Northern Quarter and the MediaCityUK complex at Salford Quays. Studios such as TeamLab North (creative agency), Code Computerlove (digital agency, 200+ staff) and indie game studios in the Manchester Digital network actively use Fooocus for concept art and rapid asset iteration. The Manchester School of Theatre and MMU Manchester Metropolitan University Creative Digital Industries department incorporate Fooocus in coursework.
Sheffield (Sheffield Hallam, University of Sheffield, Sheffield Digital): Sheffield Hallam’s MA Animation programme uses Fooocus for concept-stage character and environment design. Sheffield’s strong indie-games cluster (including Sumo Group, although Sumo is a larger AAA shop, plus numerous smaller studios) makes pragmatic use of Fooocus for pre-production asset generation. The Sheffield Doc/Fest has hosted AI-generated film panels featuring Fooocus-using filmmakers.
Leeds (University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett, Channel 4 Leeds HQ): With Channel 4’s HQ relocation to Leeds in 2019, the city’s creative-industries ecosystem has expanded substantially. Channel 4 commissioning experiments and freelance creators across Leeds use Fooocus. The University of Leeds School of Design and Leeds Beckett School of Arts use Fooocus in coursework.
Newcastle / Gateshead (BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Northumbria University, Newcastle University): BALTIC has hosted AI-art exhibitions where Fooocus-generated work has been displayed. Northumbria University Digital Arts programmes incorporate the tool. The North East of England Game Hub at Sunderland includes Fooocus among recommended pre-production tools.
Liverpool (LIPA, Liverpool John Moores): The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and Liverpool John Moores University use Fooocus in screen-arts and digital-media programmes.
UK Public Sector and Broadcast
BBC R&D (London + MediaCityUK Salford): BBC R&D has experimented with Fooocus for archive illustration and accessibility-related image generation, particularly in the Audio Description Synthetic Imagery project (2024-2025). BBC editorial guidelines treat AI-generated imagery as requiring strict provenance documentation; Fooocus’s lack of native C2PA support is noted as a limitation.
Channel 4 (Leeds, London Horseferry Road): Channel 4’s commissioning experiments in synthetic and AI-assisted production have included Fooocus-generated stills and concept work, particularly in factual and documentary commissioning.
ITV (MediaCityUK Salford): ITV Studios and ITV Daytime have experimented with Fooocus for promotional artwork in synthetic-style commissions.
NHS Communications: Selected NHS regional trusts have explored Fooocus for non-clinical communications imagery where stock photography rights or representation diversity have been blockers. Use is incidental rather than strategic.
UK Industry Adoption
Synthesia (London, $1B+ unicorn valuation 2023): The UK’s most prominent generative-AI company does not use Fooocus directly (Synthesia operates a proprietary avatar synthesis pipeline) but several Synthesia engineers have publicly written about Fooocus’s UX design choices in the company’s engineering blog.
Stability AI (London-based until restructuring 2024): Stability AI as the developer of Stable Diffusion XL is the upstream model provider for Fooocus. Stability’s London office during 2023-2024 included staff who personally contributed pull requests to Fooocus and engaged with Lvmin Zhang on SDXL refiner behaviour.
ElevenLabs (London): ElevenLabs (audio) does not directly compete with Fooocus but the London ElevenLabs office hosts the AI Engineer London meetup community where Fooocus is regularly discussed.
Faculty AI (London): Faculty AI’s creative-applications team has used Fooocus in concept-design phases of HMG and NHS contracts where local data residency is required.
Disney Research London: Disney Research London’s VFX-pipeline-acceleration team has investigated Fooocus alongside other Stable Diffusion frontends for previz applications.
UK Indie Games: The UK indie games cluster (Bristol’s Bossa Studios, Cambridge’s Frontier Developments, Brighton’s Mediatonic and The Chinese Room, Newcastle’s Atomhawk, Dundee’s Outerminds) reportedly uses Fooocus alongside Midjourney for concept-art ideation, with Fooocus preferred where prompts contain IP-sensitive content that cannot leave the local network.
UK Regulatory Considerations
The UK regulatory environment for Fooocus is permissive. The UK AI Regulation White Paper (March 2023) declined to introduce statutory AI-specific legislation; the AI Safety Institute / AI Security Institute (renamed November 2024) focuses on frontier-model safety and does not regulate locally-installed generative-AI tools. The Online Safety Act 2023 imposes content responsibilities on online platforms but not on local image-generation tools used privately. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) treats Fooocus-generated images containing recognisable individuals (Faceswap outputs) as potentially personal data under UK GDPR; published ICO guidance recommends user-side caution and consent processes. The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) requires medical-device classification for any AI imaging tool used in clinical diagnosis — Fooocus is not classified as a medical device and is therefore not appropriate for diagnostic use.
Future Directions (2026-2030)
Fooocus’s strategic trajectory through 2030 is shaped by four converging forces:
1. Architecture Diversification Pressure
Fooocus is officially locked to SDXL. The wider generative-AI ecosystem is rapidly diversifying:
-
Flux.1 family (Black Forest Labs, 2024 onwards): Flux.1 Pro / Dev / Schnell delivered Midjourney-class quality with a more permissive licence than SD3. By 2026 Flux.1 has displaced SDXL as the de facto open-source quality leader.
-
Stable Diffusion 3 / 3.5 (Stability AI, 2024): improved prompt-following, multi-text rendering.
-
Stable Cascade (2024): cascaded latent diffusion at lower compute cost.
-
Hunyuan-DiT, Kolors (Tencent / Kuaishou, 2024): Chinese-origin alternatives with strong multilingual support.
-
Lumina-Next, PixArt-Sigma (2024-2025): research-grade transformer-based diffusion alternatives.
Fooocus’s continued absence from this diversification represents a strategic risk. The expected trajectory is one of three: (a) Lvmin Zhang resumes Fooocus development to add Flux.1, (b) community forks (SimpleSDXL2, RuinedFooocus) cumulatively absorb Fooocus’s user base by providing Flux support, or (c) Forge (also by Lvmin Zhang) becomes the de facto Fooocus successor by carrying forward Fooocus’s UX design choices into a multi-architecture A1111 fork.
As of May 2026 trajectory (c) appears dominant: Forge has clearly inherited Lvmin Zhang’s primary engineering attention and has implemented many Fooocus optimisations (automatic FreeU, prompt expansion, automatic refiner handling) within a much more flexible underlying engine.
2. Content Provenance and Regulatory Pressure
The EU AI Act Article 50 deepfake-disclosure obligations enter full applicability in August 2026. Fooocus’s Faceswap module operates in legal grey territory. By 2027-2028 it is plausible that:
-
Community-led C2PA Content Credentials integration becomes mandatory for distribution platforms (Replicate, RunPod) hosting Fooocus.
-
Watermarking modules (Stable Signature, Tree-Ring Watermarks) become default rather than optional.
-
UK Online Safety Act enforcement expands to cover identifiable-individual generation.
3. Edge and Mobile Deployment
Apple Silicon (M-series), Qualcomm Snapdragon X, AMD Ryzen AI 300 and Intel Core Ultra series 2 NPUs have reached sufficient capability to run SDXL Lightning at acceptable consumer speeds. By 2028 it is expected that Fooocus-class user experiences will be available on consumer laptops without dedicated GPUs. The trajectory likely splits Fooocus into two configurations: a desktop-Gradio configuration (current) and a packaged Electron/Tauri native application configuration (community fork SimpleSDXL2 has begun this work).
4. AI-Generated Asset Markets
The commercial-stock-imagery market ($4.5B globally 2025) faces substantial disruption from AI-generated assets. Adobe Stock, Shutterstock and Getty have all integrated AI-generated content with provenance metadata. Fooocus-produced images, lacking C2PA, are not eligible for these channels. Future Fooocus development is expected to address this via official C2PA support.
Projected 2026-2030 Trajectory
-
2026: ~40K stars, ~250K active monthly users, SDXL-locked, community forks provide Flux support.
-
2027: ~45K stars, plateau usage, Forge has clearly emerged as the strategic successor.
-
2028: ~50K stars, Fooocus retains educational and onboarding niches, primary creative use migrates to Forge / SwarmUI / ComfyUI.
-
2029-2030: ~55K stars, archival project status, sustained by hobbyist nostalgia and educational stability, similar to how earlier-generation tools (NMKD GUI, EasyDiffusion) settled into long-tail use.
