Current Landscape (2026)
- The foundational standard was revised: ISO 14721:2025, the third edition of the OAIS Reference Model, was published by CCSDS in December 2024 and by ISO in March 2025, introducing measurable Preservation Objectives, a new Preservation Watch function for continuous risk monitoring, and a more flexible Information Package that makes Preservation Description Information optional to support “ingest first, describe later” workflows.
- Generative AI moved from pilots to production in archival workflows through 2025-2026: vendors such as Preservica launched “AI Editions” (announced 4 June 2026) with built-in PII detection, OCR, AV transcription and captioning, automated metadata standardisation and semantic search, marketed as processing backlogs up to four times faster with human-in-the-loop oversight.
- Transformer-based Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) matured in 2025, using contextual reasoning rather than character-by-character OCR, with few-shot models able to learn an individual hand from around ten examples and AI-driven binarisation cleaning faded or stained originals before transcription.
- “AI readiness” became a distinct discipline: the Archives and Records Association published AI Preparedness Guidelines for Archivists (Colavizza and Jaillant, 2025) framing readiness around completeness, metadata and access, coherent data types/formats, and application-specific metrics, alongside tools such as AIDRIN (AI Data Readiness Inspector, 2024).
- Infrastructure consolidated on hybrid-cloud, cloud-native (container/Kubernetes) architectures with tiered hot/cool/cold storage (down to S3 Glacier), while linked-data adoption advanced via BIBFRAME displacing MARC and entity services like OCLC Meridian and WorldCat Entities enriching records with URIs.
- National-scale programmes went live, including the Swiss National Library’s new digital long-term archive (spring 2025) and continued pan-European convergence on the e-ARK Information Package specification, discussed at the IIPC General Assembly 2025.
- Open challenges as of 2026 centre on authenticity and provenance in the face of deepfakes and generative content (prompting blockchain/DLT chain-of-custody experiments), preserving provenance and respect des fonds when AI generates derivatives, and debate over whether truly permanent preservation requires hybrid analogue fallbacks such as LE500 archival microfilm now that ISO 14721:2025 explicitly accommodates non-digital objects.
