Context Aware Computing is a paradigm in which systems automatically adapt their behaviour based on contextual signals such as the user’s location, activity, device state, social environment, and temporal cues. In spatial computing and XR applications, context awareness allows virtual overlays and services to respond intelligently to physical surroundings, enabling location-sensitive AR, adaptive user interfaces, and personalised immersive experiences.

Overview
Context Aware Computing systems sense, interpret, and respond to a rich stream of environmental signals. In spatial computing, this means an AR application can recognise the physical room it is operating in, identify objects via computer vision and scene understanding, adjust rendered overlays to occlude behind real surfaces, and alter audio cues based on acoustic properties of the space. IoT sensors enrich the context model with environmental data such as temperature, occupancy, and lighting levels. Sensor fusion algorithms combine accelerometers, gyroscopes, cameras, and depth sensors to maintain a coherent world model. User experience is elevated when applications anticipate needs — for example, surfacing navigation cues only when the user’s gaze suggests they are lost, or dimming notifications during detected high-concentration tasks. The discipline draws from ubiquitous computing research and is foundational to ambient intelligence architectures.
